Terps Strong in Season Opener at Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Maryland had a strong start to its 2013 indoor track season with a solid showing at the Nittany Lion Invitational on the campus of Penn State University Saturday.

Julie Sinkovitz captured the 600 meter with a personal best time of 1:31.46 as three Terps placed in the top 10. Sophomore Shade Pratt (1:35.98) and freshman Katie Nappi (1:39.16) took fifth and ninth, respectively.

Maryam Fikri took third with a personal record in the 1000 meter (2:53.82).

The Terps kicked off the 2013 season with a bang in the field events as Amber Melville won the high jump (5-10.50) while Thea LaFond (5-08.00) and Amina Smith (5-07.00) took third and fifth. Melville's mark was a personal best and ranks fifth all-time at Maryland. LaFond also placed second in the triple jump (41-10.00), registering the second best time in program history.

Senior Moriah Young began her final indoor campaign with a first-place finish and a personal record in the shot put (50-02.75) and a second-place showing in the weight throw (58-05.75). Young's shot put toss moved her to third all-time at Maryland and her weight throw ranks seventh.

A pair of freshmen - Chioma Onyekwere (43-09.75) and Sonya Napariu (42-01.25) - finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Napariu (45-05.25) was also seventh in the weight throw.

The Terps captured fourth in both relays with the group of Fikri, Bumpas, Nappi and Sheffo (12:22.48) competing in the distance and Ayanna Fields, Ashley Brannock, Hicks and Statham (3:58.54) in the 4x400.

Other top 10 finishers included Myah Hicks in the 1 mile run (eighth - 4:58.14), Arielle Statham (seventh - 57.74), and Bridget Nolan in the 3000 meter (eighth - 10:45.34). Hicks' time in the 1 mile cracked the five minute mark and registered as an ECAC qualifier.

The Terps return to action next Saturday when they play host to the Terrapin Invitational in Landover, Md., at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex.
