DENTON, Texas - Senior Lisa Mealey (Bensalem, Pa.) won the all-around competition with a 39.000 as the University of Maryland women's gymnastics team fell to Texas Women's University 189.675-189.475 in the opening meet of the season.
Mealey registered scores of 9.800 on vault, the uneven bars and the floor exercise, and a 9.600 on beam before placing first with an all-around score of 39.000. Also scoring well was senior Kit Johnson (Virginia Beach, Va.) who won beam with a score of 9.850, followed in second place by Mealey. Freshman Leah Brill (Lancaster, Pa.) placed third on beam in the first meet of her collegiate career with a 9.550. Additionally, seniors Gillian Cote (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Alyssa Mealey (Bensalem, Pa.) joined Lisa Mealey in turning in solid bar routines, scoring 9.775 and 9.750, respectively.
However, the Pioneers sealed their victory in the final rotation, with all competitors scoring over a 9.500 on the floor exercise to give Texas Women's a team floor exercise score of 48.475. For the Terps, no one other than Lisa Mealey scored higher than a 9.3 on floor.
Next on the Terrapins' schedule is a three-meet homestand starting with a meet against the reigning Atlantic 10 champion George Washington Friday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m., followed by a tri-meet with Georgia and Temple Sunday, Jan. 27 at 1 p.m., and concluding with the seventh-annual Governor's Cup with East Atlantic Gymnastics League opponents Towson, North Carolina and NC State Saturday, Feb 2 at 7 p.m.
