INDIANAPOLIS - Senior University of Maryland All-American gymnast Gillian Cote (Fredericksburg, Va.) is one of 58 senior winter athletes receiving the NCAA postgraduate scholarship in the amount of $5,000. Cote, a 2001 Verizon Academic All-American, is a history major with a cumulative 4.0 grade point average.
In order to be eligible for the scholarship, senior student athletes had to have a 3.2 grade-point average and must have displayed outstanding athletic participation in the varsity sport he or she was nominated from. Other requirements were behaving credibly on and off the field and intentions of continuing education beyond the baccalaureate degree as either a full-time or part-time graduate student.
The NCAA awards 58 winter sport awards and 116 to those participating in fall or spring sports, totaling 174 postgraduate scholarships each year.
Cote is one of the only student athletes at Maryland to maintain a 4.0 grade point average over four years. Her achievements in the classroom have helper her lead the women's gymnastics team to winning the President's Cup three times in the past four years. The President's Cup honors the men's and women's athletic teams with the highest combined grade point averages at the University of Maryland.
