MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Senior Lisa Mealey (Bensalem, Pa.) placed eighth in the all-around with a 39.150 to lead the five Maryland gymnasts competing in the NCAA Regional meet at West Virginia Saturday night. Finishing as the third all-around competitor not on a team placing first or second, Mealey will be an alternate for the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year.
Sophomore Sarah Hoenig (Seaford, N.Y.) competed well on the balance beam, placing seventh with a 9.875, but needed to finish in first place to advance to nationals.
Senior Gillian Cote (Fredericksburg, Va.) and East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Rookie of the Year Leah Brill (Lancster, Pa.) were supposed to represent the Terps as all-around competitors along with Mealey, however Brill was unable to compete due to injuries and Cote was not able to compete on vault. However, Cote earned a 9.800 on the uneven bars to place 13th and a 9.800 on the balance beam to place 14th. Senior Alyssa Mealey (Bensalem, Pa.) earned a 9.725 on the floor exercise.
Lisa Mealey will travel to the University of Alabama on April 16 to be ready to compete in case another all-around competitor has to withdraw.
