The Black Squad defeated the Red at the annual Red and Black intrasquad meet Thursday night. The meet came down to the wire, but Black ultimately edged out Red 168.15-167.825.
Judged by fellow Maryland student-athletes, the girls recorded many perfect scores. The team held a closed-door intrasquad in November with professional judges, but this one was more focused on getting everyone accustomed to performing for an audience and fans. For Nelligan, the night was a huge success for girls of all classes.
“Starting from the freshmen, Sarah Faller now two weeks in a row [with November’s intrasquad] she’s gone three-for-three both weeks,” Nelligan said. “With the freshmen you just never know what they’re going to be like until they get out there, and she’s a natural in competition settings.”
With Faller on Red, Kathy Tang also stood out to Nelligan. Tang, who suffered injury last season, gave stellar performances. “Having Kat back at full strength is so key,” Nelligan said.
Stephanie Giameo suffered an uncharacteristic fall on beam for the Red team, but said it was nice to get it out of her system early in the season.
On the Black team, Nelligan noted Karen Tang’s strong floor and bar routines along with powerful performances from Katy Dodds.
The team starts its regular season on the road Jan. 10 at Central Michigan.
