Kevin's Corner: A Transformational Day

Greetings, Terps!

After 19 months of detailed and collaborative preparation, a transformational day for the University of Maryland has arrived.  Academically, athletically, and globally, our world-class institution is now aligned with state flagship institutions that share our same values.

It has been both a comprehensive and invigorating process for our students, faculty, staff, and alumni that will be the beneficiaries of our new affiliation.

In the classroom, our students will have access to nearly ten times more library books through the Big Ten’s academic network — the CIC — Committee for Institutional Cooperation. Members share information technology, labs, courses, libraries, overseas study, and more. We joined the CIC one year ago, and dividends are quickly being realized.  Collaborative research in fields such as sports-related concussions and language acquisition are already taking place.

Athletically, we welcome a host of newly forming rivals this coming fall and winter, including our first Big Ten home football game against Ohio State on October 4. On November 15, Rose Bowl champion Michigan State visits Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium for a Big Ten Network primetime game.  In men’s basketball, three of this year’s NCAA Elite Eight teams will visit Comcast Center, and our women’s basketball program enters a conference that regularly features some of the most passionate fan bases in college athletics.

Unprecedented access on the Big Ten Network — the conference’s television channel — will also elevate our branding and communication efforts on a global stage.  Each of our sports programs will benefit from the opportunities on BTN, along with its cutting edge digital and social media opportunities. Membership in the Big Ten also allows us to improve services for student-athletes, such as scholarships, sports medicine and nutrition.

With a 25% increase in football season ticket sales year-to-date, increases in premium seat sales, and our efforts to better to tell our story through our Terrapin Club Scholarship Fund, we hope you share our heightened level of Maryland Pride. There will be many new experiences and traditions that will begin this summer and fall, and we hope you will join us for this true renaissance in Maryland Athletics.

To be certain, it is a GREAT time to be a Terp!
