SAN JUAN, P.R. – The No. 7 Maryland women’s basketball team will take on Ohio University Saturday at 1 p.m. ET in its last game in the San Juan Shootout at the Mario Morales Coliseum in Guaynabo, P.R.
The Terps (6-1) won their opener in the event Friday as they controlled both ends of the floor Saturday from the tip in a 100-59 rout of Texas Southern.
Preseason All-American Alyssa Thomas led Maryland with 23 points and 10 rebounds for her sixth straight double-double in the Terps’ first seven games. Freshman Shatori Walker-Kimbrough added a new career-high 17, while senior Katie Rutan notched 14, all in the second half. Senior Alicia DeVaughn scored 11. Point guards Brene Moseley and Lexie Brown had nine and eight assists, respectively.
Maryland controlled the game from the tip, leading by more than 20 at the break. The Tigers chipped into the lead early in the second half, but after a timeout called by head coach Brenda Frese, the Terrapins went on a run to answer. Maryland held TSU’s Jazzmin Parker, the nation’s leading scorer with 28.0 points per game, to 23 points, but just one field goal in the second half.
Ohio (3-2) lost to Illinois-Chicago, 76-67, Friday in its opener. Mariah Byard and Hannah Boesinger each scored 18 to lead the Bobcats.
Next, the Terrapins will host Ohio State Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. For tickets, log on to umterps.com or call 1-800-IM-A-TERP.
