PRINCETON, N.J. – The University of Maryland women’s cross country team will have its final tune-up before the start of championship season this Saturday when it travels to the Princeton Invitational.

Saturday’s meet will give the Terrapins a chance to gain some confidence heading into the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship on Nov. 1 and the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Nov. 15.

The trip to Princeton comes after a difficult performance at the Lehigh Paul Short Run, where the Terps finished 40th in the team standings and had two runners drop out of the race due to heat.

Maryland has had some previous success at the Princeton Invitational, winning the team championship in 2008. That year, Erin Matyus and Kristin Reed finished 1-2 in the individual standings.

This year, the Terrapins are showing some consistency in terms of their split between the first and fifth runners. Twice this season, Maryland has had less than a minute separating those positions, packing their runners in good placings to post low point totals.

Senior Becky Yep also seems to be returning to form for Maryland. After leading the Terrapins to the line last season in each of their final three races, including the ACCs and Regionals, Yep took that top spot again for the team at the Lehigh meet.

She posted the same time at Lehigh as freshman Hannah Mansbach, who ended up in the No. 1 position in each of the Terrapins’ first two meets this year.

Senior Bridget Nolan has been strong through the first half of the season, running between the second and fourth spot in the first three events. Senior Julie Sinkovitz ran her first cross country event of the season at Lehigh, placing third on the team.

Maryland, ranked 14th in the most recent Mid-Atlantic rankings by the U.S. Track & Field–Cross Country Coaches Association, is expecting to face some other ranked opponents at Princeton. Duquesne (6th), Penn (7th), Lehigh (9th) and La Salle (12th) are scheduled to run on Saturday.

The women’s race takes the line on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
