COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The freshman duo of Seth Stammler (Gahanna, Ohio) and Abe Thompson (Fairfax Station, Va.) connected twice to lead the Maryland men's soccer team (8-6-0) past Duquesne (7-7-2) Wednesday night at Ludwig Field. For the Terps, the 4-0 win was the team's third straight shutout.

Maryland controlled the entire game, with Stammler hitting his first goal in the sixth minute. Thompson fired a hard shot that rebounded off a Duquesne defender and found Stammler's feet in traffic. The freshman striker then made the deposit from seven yards out for the 1-0 Terrapin lead.

The Terps didn't score again until the second half when Clarence Goodson (Springfield, Va.) found the net on a Tyler Pharr (Dallas, Texas) pass from close range to put the Terps up two. Stammler converted again in the 66th minute on a wide cross from Thompson to make it a 3-0 Terp advantage. The two-goal performance was the first multiple-goal game of Stammler's career.

Pharr topped off the Maryland victory with a goal of his own at 78:14 when Reed Rickert (Sewickley, Pa.) tipped a soft lob over Duquesne keeper Terry McNelis, who was drawn out on the play. Once Rickert found Pharr, the Dukes could only watch the junior defender pitch it in from close range. Senior Mike Shebuski (Bloomington, Minn.) was also credited with an assist for getting the play started.

Christian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) recorded his sixth shutout of the season, and had five saves on the day. Maryland is home again on Sunday in the second half of a doubleheader with the Maryland women's team. The Terrapin women open play Sunday afternoon at noon, with the men to follow at 2:30 p.m. Both teams will meet William & Mary at Ludwig Field for the Sunday doubleheader.
