COLLEGE PARK, MD - Maryland senior forward Pierre Venditti, who came off the bench this afternoon, scored his second goal of the season at the 95 minute mark in overtime to lead the Terrapins to a 3-2 overtime victory against the top-ranked Duke Blue Devils at Ludwig Field Sunday afternoon. Venditti, who has started in all but two of the Terps' eight contests, was replaced in the starting lineup by sophomore forward Jason Sardis.

Maryland completely controlled the tempo of the game from the onset, however, it was the Blue Devils who found an open net and a breakdown of the Maryland defense at the 16 minute mark after junior forward Troy Garner took an a Jay Heaps-assisted ball from the left side and found net from 10 yards out.

The Blue Devils would take a 1-0 lead in at the half. The two teams would play scoreless soccer for the first 20 minutes before Garner would find the net again, this time off an assist by Peter Gail. Garner pounded a shot from five yards out with the ball escaping through Maryland goalkeeper Christian Lewis' hands.

The Terps didn't let up, however, playing their most aggressive style of offense seen on the afternoon. Not a minute after Garner scored his second goal of the day, Maryland junior midfielder Jason Cropley took a deflected pass from freshman Taylor Twellman from 20 yards out and sent the ball past Duke goalkeeper Atli Knuttsson. Twellman would score his ninth goal of the season after Cropley sent him the ball which was a direct result of a Duke foul which Maryland senior Randy Merkel would quickly play the ball to Cropley.

Maryland found the net first in the first overtime period as Keith Beach played the ball to Jason Sardis from the left side. Sardis served Venditti on a cross ball and found him at the corner of the box and Venditti headed the ball in to score the game-winner.

In goal, Lewis posted three saves while Knuttson totaled five. Maryland improves to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in ACC play. The Blue Devils suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 8-1 overall, and 1-1 in the ACC.
