COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The fourth-ranked Maryland men's soccer team fired off 29 shots but needed only one goal Tuesday as it shutout Saint Peter's, 1-0, in non-conference action at Ludwig Field.

With time expiring in the first half and playing a man up after a red card was issued to Peacock midfielder Lebongang Pila , Jason Herrick tacked on his fourth goal of the year when his half volley from 18-yards out to the upper right corner gave Maryland a 1-0 lead with 12 seconds remaining. Freshman Kevin Dansky was credited with his first collegiate assist on the goal.

Maryland continued to scatter shots at the Peacock defense and had several close calls in the second half. Matt Oduaran had a breakaway chance batted out by a defender after making his way around Saint Peter's goalkeeper Carlos Suarez with 25 minutes left in the game. Five minutes later, Taylor Kemp had a solid cross to London Woodberry on the far side that was headed back to an open Billy Cortes. Cortes' strike went high of the goal and the game remained a one-goal contest. At the 75 minute mark the Terps had another near-miss when Herrick's left-footed tap inched into the finger tips of Suarez.

Saint Peter's got its best chance with only eight minutes remaining when midfielder Rumen Kerekov dribbled into Maryland keeper Will Swaim and fired a shot that curled to Swaim's left, but Kemp was in perfect position to head it out of harm's way.

Maryland out-shot Saint Peter's 29-7 en route to its third shutout of the 2009 season. Swaim picked up his second win and second shutout of the year. Herrick's goal was his third game-winner this season.

"We got the win and we got the shutout," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "We got some guys into the game and they came in and performed quite well.

"We needed to take better advantage of being a man up but we've filed it and are moving forward to Friday."

Maryland will aim for program win number 600 on Friday when it plays host to No. 2 North Carolina. The rematch from last season's national title game will begin at 8 p.m. and will be shown live on Fox Soccer Channel.
