COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Junior Chris Carrieri scored two goals and added an assist for North Carolina to give the Tar Heels a 5-1 win Saturday night at Ludwig Field. Tenth-ranked North Carolina is now 10-2 (3-1 ACC), while the host Terrapins fall to 5-6 (1-3 ACC).
Terrapin freshman Philip Salyer (Dallas, Texas) scored his fourth goal in four games just over seven minutes into the action, but it would prove to be the only goal for Maryland all night. The Maryland goal, a dynamic diving header from six yards out, was assisted by classmate and Terrapin leading scorer Abe Thompson (Fairfax Station, Va.). Carolina evened things up at 24:50 when Logan Pause netted his third goal of the year on a long cross off a scramble in front of the Terrapin goal.
The Tar Heels took the lead when Matt Laycock took a Carrieri corner kick and deposited it in the right side of the net from seven yards out. Carolina took the 2-1 lead into the break, and momentum never swung the Terps way again. Caleb Norkus put the Heels up two less than three minutes into the second half, setting up Carrieri for the final two-goal punch to make the final score a 5-1 Tar Heel victory.
Maryland meets George Mason in a key regional match-up on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. as part of a Maryland doubleheader with the women's soccer team. The women's game against Howard starts at 5 p.m. North Carolina is at the UNC-Greensboro Invitational next weekend for their next action. The Tar Heels will meet Dartmouth on Sept. 13 and Rider on Sept. 15.
