SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Senior Keith Beach goal off a free kick at the 35:10 mark of the first half broke a 1-1 tie and the 12th-ranked Maryland Terrapins went on to defeat the USF Dons, 3-1 in the opening night of the Santa Clara Nike-Coca Cola Classic at Buck Shaw Stadium. The win improves Maryland's record to 7-2-0 while USF falls to 1-8-0.
After USF took an early lead on a Fabio Pires goal at the 19:19 mark of the first half, the Terps tied the game at 1-1 on a goal by Jason Cropley at the 31:41 mark. Cropley trapped a cross from Jason Sardis and then rifled the ball past Don goal keeper Zack Vaughn. Less than four minutes later, the Terps scored what proved to be the game-winner on Beach's free kick. On a quick restart, Beach fired the ball into the lower right corner of the net from 20 yards out at the right edge of the box, surprising the USF wall and keeper Vaughn.
Maryland's Jason Cropley scored the Terps final goal at the 47:30 mark of the second half. Beckett Hollenbach was credited with the assist. USF outshot Maryland, 11-7. Terp goalkeeper Christian Lewis had three saves while Don keeper Zack Vaughn finished with two. Maryland will meet 18th-ranked Santa Clara on Saturday beginning at 7:00 p.m., while USF will meet CS Northridge beginning at 5:00 p.m. In tonight's second match, Santa Clara will square off against CS Northridge.
