RICHMOND, Va. -- Maryland defeated Virginia Commonwealth 1-0 in a non-conference match at Sports Backers Stadium on a goal just six minutes in from Terrapin freshman Abe Thompson.

Maryland came out of the gates dominating play and would get the only goal they would need for the victory in the sixth minute when Rams defender Milorad Djordjevic fouled Terrapin attacker Seth Stammler just outside the penalty area. Thompson blasted a shot on the ensuing free kick from 18 yards out, beating junior goalkeeper Adam Mead to his right for the early lead.

The Terps' defense held on in the waning minutes to make head coach Sasho Cirovski's birthday a good one by earning the win. Terrapin goalkeeper Christian Lewis made two saves for his fifth shutout of the season. Maryland, who beat George Mason, 4-0 Wednesday night, avenged the Rams' upset victory over the seventh-ranked Terps last season in College Park, Md.
