Raleigh, N.C. -- Abe Thompson's (Fairfax Station, Va.) penalty kick in the 43rd minute was the game-winner for Maryland, as the Terrapins beat NC State 3-0 at Method Road Stadium. The Terps' record goes to 5-1 (1-0 ACC) while NC State falls to 1-4 (0-1 ACC).
Despite the Terrapins dominating most of the first half statistically, tallying eight shots to NC State's two while taking nine corner kicks to the Wolfpack's three. Maryland put one on the board in the 43rd minute when a penalty kick resulted from a foul in the box. After taking the Wolfpack foul, Thompson picked up the ball, spotted for the penalty kick and buried it in the right side of the net past NC State's Mitchell Watson. The half would show a 1-0 Maryland advantage on the scoreboard after the Thompson conversion.
The lead would stay the same through most of the second frame, then Maryland picked up two goals in the final six minutes of the contest. Maryland's second score of the game was by Nino Marcantonio (Bethesda, Md.) who took a cross from Thompson and scored his third goal of the season in the 85th minute. A.J. Herrera (Albuquerque, N.M.) was also credited with an assit on the play Just under two minutes later, Maryland's final goal was scored by Herrera on assists from Domenic Mediate (Southlake, Texas) and Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.).
Maryland keeper Noah Palmer (Williamsburg, Va.) recorded the shutout in goal, his second of the year, making four saves on the day. NC State's Mitchell Watson was credited with eight saves on the day.
Maryland hosts William & Mary on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. on Ludwig Field and then meets Duke on Sunday at 2 p.m. That game will also be played in College Park.
