COLLEGE PARK, Md.- - The Maryland men's soccer team put one in the win column Wednesday night, pouncing all over Princeton and notching the 5-2 victory at Ludwig Field. The Terrapins are now 4-3-1, while the Tigers suffered their first loss of the season and fall to 3-1-2.
Maryland freshman Wes Kirk (Bloomfield, N.J.) found the back of the net in the 29th minute to start a night that would see the teams combine for seven goals. Sumed Ibrahim (Tamale, Ghana) started the play with a forward pass to A.J. Herrera (Albuquerque, N.M.), who lobbed a perfect cross over the defense to Kirk on the left side of the field. Kirk made the deposit for his second goal of the year and a 1-0 Terps' lead.
Siba Mohammed (Tamale, Ghana) sparked the Terps' offense in the second half, scoring at 48:37 off a pass from Sumed on a header from 10 yards out. Sumed crossed it from the right wing to an airborne Siba who fit it past Princeton goalie Jason White on the left side to give Maryland a 2-0 lead. White finished with five saves in the loss.
Princeton scored its first goal of the night at 55:11 when Adrian Melville capitalized on a high volley in front of the net and headed one past Terp keeper Noah Palmer (Williamsburg, Va.), who finished the day with two saves and the win.
In the 60th minute, Sumed scored the game-winner for Maryland off a right-to-left sequence from Jason Arnold (Fairfax Station, Va.) and midfielder Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.). Sumed was waiting at the top of the box and headed the ball into the right side of the net from 10 yards out for the 3-1 Terps' advantage. He finished the day with four points off the game-winner and two assists, the assist was Arnold's first career point.
Sophomore transfer Robert Sjolund (Borlang, Sweden) provided some insurance at 67:34, placing a slow roller into the lower right corner for Maryland. Domenic Mediate (South Lake, Texas) and Philip Salyer (Dallas, Texas) were both credited with assists on the goal, the first of Sjolund's career.
Michael Dello-Russo (Columbia, Md.) added to the second-half scoring barrage courtesy of a neat cross from Sjolund. The 10-yard conversion was Dello-Russo's first collegiate goal and gave the Terps a 5-1 lead, matching their highest scoring output of the year.
Princeton added one more to its total when Melville found the net again for his fifth goal of the year with less than four minutes remaining, leaving the final score a 5-2 Maryland victory. Mike Nugent and Matt Douglas were credited with assist on the play.
The Terps travel to No. 12 North Carolina for a Sunday match at Fetzer Field at 2 p.m. Maryland, 0-1-1 in conference play, is looking for its first ACC win. Princeton is at Harvard on Saturday for a noon contest.
