COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 6 Maryland men's soccer team handed No. 2 UConn its first loss of the season, 1-0, Tuesday night at Ludwig Field.

The Terps (6-2-1, 2-1-1 ACC) stymied a potent UConn (7-1-2, 1-0-1 BIG EAST) offense that had amassed 26 goals through its first nine matches.

Freshman Patrick Mullins notched his third goal of the year after his header in the 35th minute sailed past outstretched UConn keeper Josh Ford to his left from 12-yards out for the eventual game-winner. Sophomore Paul Torres was credited with the assist. It was only the fourth goal UConn has allowed in 2010.

Terp goalkeeper Zac MacMath recorded his second straight shutout against a top-ten ranked opponent behind a strong defensive effort by the Maryland backline. UConn, which entered Tuesday's match averaging over 17 shots per game, was outshot 17-13 in the non-conference showdown featuring two of the perennial powers in all of college soccer.

Tuesday's match also concluded Maryland's arguably toughest three-game stretch of the season, as the Terps amble on with wins over No. 9 Duke and No. 2 UConn, following a loss to No. 3 North Carolina.

"Connecticut is obviously a great team," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "This was a tough stretch for us. Our young talented backline is coming together. And some of the attacking pieces will come.

"I feel good about this last stretch and, as we get into the second half of the season now, I think we are getting closer to the type of team we can be."

Maryland looks to gain ground in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings when it travels to Virginia Tech Friday night.
