COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The second-ranked Maryland men's soccer team controlled all of the action to cruise to a 4-0 victory over UConn Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field.

The Terps, playing without starters Abe Thompson and Clarence Goodson, had no let up in the attack as the ran their winning streak to 21 at Ludwig Field.

Maryland's Nino Marcantonio opened the scoring when he blasted a shot into the lower right corner on a penalty kick in the 29th minute. Marcantonio drew the foul in the box when UConn's Mpho Moloi went through him on a throw-in by Kenney Bertz. This was the third time this season that Maryland has scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick.

Terp forward Jason Garey, starting in place of the injured Abe Thompson, tacked on two goals in the middle of the second half to put the game out of reach. On his first goal, Garey forced a UConn turnover in their own third of the field and got off a shot along the ground into the lower left corner. His second goal came after the Terps quickly moved the ball from their own end toward the net as Scott Buete played to Domenic Mediate who found a streaking Garey with a perfect pass in the middle of the field. Garey, holding off a UConn defender, got the shot past Husky keeper Adam Schuerman for the goal.

The Terrapins closed out the scoring on a tremendous shot from Erwin Diaz. Diaz, with his back the goal, quickly turned and fired a shot from the top of the box that rattled off the inside of the left post and into the net for the score.

"Their back line was tough to penetrate early on, but we eventually were able to stretch them out and put pressure on them," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "We had great effort today. The last time we had an effort like this was against Loyola (Sept. 10)."

Maryland dominated the possession throughout the game, and finished the match with a decisive 19-6 advantage in shots. The Terrapins also recorded their eighth shutout of the season, five shy of the team record (13) set last season.

Maryland (11-1) will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 16, against Penn State in Hershey, Pa.
