COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman Rodney Wallace scored twice as the Maryland men's soccer team beat Villanova, 4-0, on October 16 at Ludwig Field. Junior Graham Zusi assisted on both of his goals while sophomore Jeremy Hall recorded a goal and an assist in the victory.

Maryland extended its unbeaten streak to five games and is 3-0-2 during its current homestand. Sophomore Drew Yates added a goal in the win while junior Michael Marchiano notched his first career point, an assist off of a corner kick that Yates cleaned up.

A raucous crowd of 1,603 was in attendance for the Tuesday night matchup, mostly filled with the university's fraternities and sororities for a spirit contest as part of their Homecoming Week festivities.

"First of all, I want to thank our student fans for giving us a great atmosphere at a midweek game," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "I'd love to ask all of the participants in the spirit contest to come back frequently."

"I felt good about where we were," Cirovski continued about the game. "I knew it was just a matter of time for us before we started putting complete games together. We were sharp in all areas and we put a lot of pressure on them. You could see towards the end that we wore them down a little bit. You can see Jeremy Hall is playing with a high level of confidence right now. Graham Zusi played his best game in a month. Rodney Wallace just made two great goals and is a tireless worker. When you have a bunch of guys that can step up like that it, just opens the game up for everybody else. I was extremely happy with the performance. We've been in a lot of battles but today I thought we were good the entire game."

Maryland dominated the entire 90 minutes as it outshot Villanova 20-6 and took 14 corner kicks. Despite those numbers, the Wildcats almost struck first in the early going less than a minute in. Villanova had the ball in its offensive third on the left side. The ball was sent into the box where Mike Del Guercio was waiting. He redirected the ball towards the right side of the goal but it hit the post and trickled out of bounds.

It did not take the Terrapins much longer to notch their first goal of the game as Wallace handled the ball on the left side in the sixth minute. Wallace played the ball to Zusi to his right and then made a run towards goal. Zusi flicked a one-time pass in front of Wallace who got to the ball before keeper Jason Friel and put a shot into the back of the net.

Villanova nearly scored an equalizer with 32:17 on the clock when Del Guercio ripped a turnaround shot from 25 yards out. Del Guercio nailed the crossbar and the ball popped out to allow Maryland to keep its 1-0 lead into halftime.

It only took the Terps six minutes in the second half to score again as Hall and Zusi set up Wallace perfectly on the left side of the box for his second goal of the night to make it 2-0.

Freshman keeper Thorne Holder went virtually uncontested the entire night but was there when Maryland needed him. With 35:14 to go in the game, Del Guercio posed yet another threat as he handled the ball on the left side of the pitch. He found Joe Taylor who found a seam to shoot and sent in a low blast that Holder handled.

The Terps added more cushion in the 71st minute as a free kick was given to them after a Villanova foul. The ball was sent into the box but the Wildcats committed a foul, giving the Terps a penalty kick. Hall took it and hit his second PK of the season to make it 3-0.

Maryland continued on the attack, never letting up in the 90 minutes, and earned its 14th corner kick of the night in the 89th minute. Marchiano stepped up to take it and sent in a pass. The ball bounced around in a crowd for a little bit before Yates sent in his team-leading seventh goal of the year.

The Terps (6-4-3) look to stay unbeaten during their nine-game homestand when they take on Cal State Northridge on Sunday, October 21 at 1:00 p.m. at Ludwig Field.
