CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- - The No. 10 Maryland men's soccer teamd dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 20 Kentucky to send them home with a 1-1 record to open the season. Kentucky also evens its record at 1-1.
Kentucky struck first when a Terrapin foul led to a free kick opportunity in the left corner. Nathan Fleetwood found Lasse Lagerblom in the box, where he got the shot past Terps' keeper Noah Palmer (Williamsburg, Va.) from four yards out. The goal came in the 11th minute and gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats scored again on another set piece in the 28th minute. Dani Kamras directed the rebounded that came off a Terrapin defender off Palmer and into the goal for a 2-0 KU advantage.
Maryland got one on the board early in the second half, when a yellow card on Kentucky's Craig Pyckett resulted in a free kick 15 yards out. Junior Seth Stammler (Gahanna, Ohio) found Domenic Mediate (Southlake, Texas) for the goal to bring the Terps within one, 2-1.
The Terps made a solid push throughout the second half, taking 12 shots and giving Kentucky no looks, but could not convert, leaving the score 2-1.
The Terrapins host the Maryland/FILA Classic on Friday, Sept. 6, and Sun., Sept. 8. Action kick-offs on Friday with No. 5 Virginia meeting Virginia Commonwealth at 5 p.m. and continues with No. 10 Maryland hosting No. 17 Penn State at 7:30 p.m. Penn State and Virginia meet on Sunday at noon, with Maryland and VCU closing out tourney action at 2:30 p.m.
