Columbia, S.C. - - The University of Maryland men's soccer team upset No. 11 South Carolina in it's first match of the Gamecock Soccer Classic tonight at Stone Stadium. USC falls to 8-3, while the Terrapins improve to 6-5-1.

With only nine seconds remaining in the first half, Maryland's Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) fired from 15-yards out to score the lone goal of the match. Philip Salyer (Dallas, Texas) and Siba Mohammed (Tamale, Ghana) were credited with the assists. The shot came from the near post for Buete's second goal of the year.

"To outshoot a team like Maryland, 13-5, shows we came back with a great deal of intensity in the second half," stated Head Coach Mark Berson. "I give the team a lot of credit."

USC outshot the Terrapins, 7-1, in the second half of play, but the Terps' defense, anchored by co-captain Beckett Hollenbach (Havertown, Pa.), held on for Maryland's second shutout of the year. Gamecock goalkeeper Michael Bachmeyer posted two saves, while Maryland's Noah Palmer (Wiliamsburg, Va.) registered five saves in the win.

The second day of the Gamecock Soccer Classic begins Sunday, Oct. 21 at 11:00 a.m. when College of Charleston takes on Maryland . No. 11 South Carolina will host No. 8 Rutgers in the second match of the day. Kickoff is slated for 1:30.
