COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior forward Jason Garey recorded the second hat trick of his career to lead No. 8 Maryland to a 3-0 win over St. Bonaventure Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field. The Terps out-shot the Bonnies 25-6 as Maryland shut out its third straight opponent.
Maryland (5-1-0) has won four straight and has outscored its opponents 12-1 in that span.
"I thought we were a little casual in the first half, but we really came out on fire in the second," head coach Sasho Cirovski said.
Maryland pressured St. Bonaventure (1-4-1) with quality chances in the opening part of the game. The Terps broke through with a goal on a corner kick as A.J. Godbolt's corner went to the far post where he found Kenney Bertz. Bertz' headed it back to the near post over Bonnie goalie Jonathan Blanchard where Garey got his head on it for the score at 24:23. The Terps stayed on the attack the rest of the way, but Blanchard made seven first half saves to keep the score at 1-0.
Garey put St. Bonaventure away with two goals in the 54th minute. Freshman Graham Zusi set up the first on a short pass inside the box, and the second came on a run in which Garey held off a defender and chipped the ball over the charging keeper for the goal. Garey's hat trick was just the sixth in Ludwig Field history and moved him into a tie for first all-time at Maryland for career goals with 45.
Freshman goalkeeper Chris Seitz earned the first start of his career and made three saves for the shutout.
"It's important to get him some games," Cirovski said of Seitz. "He looked cool and confident out there and did a nice job."
The Terrapin defense limited St. Bonaventure to just six shots, including just two in the final 45 minutes.
Maryland returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 21, for a non-conference matchup with Penn State.
