Maryland Falls Short Against Duke For First Conference Loss

Sept. 24, 2000

Box Score

College Park, Md. - Freshman Jordan Cila (Jericho, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal at 28:34 to lift the No. 16 Duke men's soccer team (5-2, 2-0 ACC) over Maryland (3-4, 1-1 ACC) by a score of 2-0 at Ludwig Field Sunday. The goal was Cila's sixth of the year.

Maryland opened with a strong, attacking offense generating good looks early, but Duke's Cila cooled the Terps with his goal. The score, a slow dribbler past Terrapin keeper Christian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.), resulted from a miscue by the Terps, who thought a foul or offsides had been called. The goal stood without question, and the Blue Devils would take the 1-0 advantage into the half.

The Terrapins only managed five shots in the second half, and even played a man-down after midfielder Jason Sardis (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) received a red card in the 78th minute. Senior tri-captain Ali Curtis (Milan, Mich.) made a Terrapins' comeback all but impossible when he crossed a hard shot from the left side of the goal past Lewis into the lower right side of the net for the Blue Devils' last score of the day.

Shots were a 19-13 Duke advantage, with Jeff Haywood (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) earning the win in goal with seven saves. Maryland's Lewis finished with nine saves in the losing effort, a season-high for the senior keeper. Abe Thompson (Fairfax, Va.) led the Terps with five shots. Both Rob Birch (West Islip, N.Y.) and Tyler Pharr (Dallas, Texas) had two shots on goal for Maryland.

For the injury-plagued Terps who fielded just 14 healthy players and used their sixth different starting lineup in seven games, it was the team's fourth straight loss at Ludwig Field. Maryland hosts American on Wednesday as part of a doubleheader with the Maryland women's team. Maryland's men's team and American square-off at 5 p.m., with the women's team hosting George Mason at 7:30 p.m. Duke meets Radford on Wednesday for a non-conference showdown that begins at 7 p.m.
