COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins men's soccer team rallied behind striker Sumed Ibrahim (Tamale, Ghana) to defeat Penn State 2-1 in the nightcap of the Maryland/FILA Classic. With the win, Maryland improves to 2-1 on the season heading into Sunday's clash with VCU, while the Nittany Lions drop to 1-2 with the loss.
Sophomore Chad Severs put the Nittany Lions on the board in the 19th minute of the contest after netting his fourth goal of the season, a put-back that hooked just inside the left post to make it 1-0 in favor of Penn State.
Maryland rallied by reeling off a pair of unanswered goals to take a 2-1 lead in the first half of action. Midfielder Domenic Mediate (Southlake, Texas) got things going for the Terps after scoring on a closely contested breakaway to knot the score at one. Sumed gave the Terps the lead in the 34th minute on a cross through the right side of the box, which he deposited in the lower left corner of the goal. Seth Stammier (Gahanna, Ohio) picked up the assist on the score for Maryland.
Sumed's goal rounded out the scoring in the contest to secure the victory for the Terrapins. Maryland will move on to meet Virginia Commonwealth in a regional tilt on Sunday, September 8, to conclude the Maryland/FILA Classic.
