Terps Get First Shutout Of The Season In 1-0 Victory Over VCU

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Maryland (5-5-1) earned its first shutout of the year, getting the 1-0 victory over Virginia Commonwealth (5-5-1) Sunday at Ludwig Field in men's soccer.

Maryland's defense stifled the Rams from the start, allowing them only three shots per half. The Terps' defensive intensity allowed the offense to get into a flow, leading to 14 Terrapin shots on the day to VCU's six.

Maryland's Robert Sjolund (Borlang, Sweden) scored the Terps' game-winning goal at the 59:14 mark when Sumed Ibrahim (Tamale, Ghana) found him in the center of the field. Sjolund beat Virginia Commmonwealth goalkeeper Steve Ankiel from 15 yards out for the goal, his second of the season. Sumed's assist was his seventh of the season.

Maryland freshman goalkeeper Noah Palmer (Williamsburg, Va.) made one save and earned the first Terps' shutout of the season, as well as the first of his career. Ankiel had five saves in the loss.

The Terrapins travel to the Gamecock Soccer Classic in Columbia, S.C., and meet No. 20 South Carolina on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. Maryland rounds out Gamecock Soccer Classic action against College of Charleston on Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. The Terps do not return home again until they meet Holy Cross on Oct. 31.

Virginia Commonwealth's next game is Wednesday, Oct. 17 at Coastal Carolina.
