COLLEGE PARK, Md. - In a game featuring two of the top three teams in the nation, the Maryland Terrapins leaned on their MAC Hermann Trophy candidate and a rugged defense.

Casey Townsend's goal in the 14th minute was all the No. 3 Terrapins needed to remain undefeated on the season as they upended previously unbeaten and second-ranked Creighton, 1-0, Friday night before a raucous crowd at Ludwig Field.

The Maryland (10-0-1) defense was strong throughout the 90 minutes, holding the Bluejays without a shot until the 48th minute of play.

Townsend's goal, his team-leading 11th of the season and the first allowed by Creighton (8-1) all year, was set up by a long assist from sophomore Patrick Mullins. Townsend won the battle in the air, flicked the ball past the Jay backline and struck a 10-yard blast into the empty net for the game-winner.

The Bluejays had chances in the second half, but the Maryland defense answered each time.

Creighton's best opportunity came after a foul in the 74th minute created a free kick just outside the penalty box. But Bruno Castro's attempt sailed over the Maryland goal.

"Our goal was to be the best defensive team on the field tonight," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "This was a College Cup type of game. Creighton is the real deal and we knew defensively we had to be very good. To hold Creighton to zero shots in the first 45 minutes was very impressive.

"I am really impressed with my guys. I was a little concerned at how they would close out this game and they did a great job."

The Terps recorded their sixth shutout of the season and third victory over a ranked opponent. It was also the highest ranked foe Maryland defeated since downing Connecticut, 1-0, on Oct. 5, 2010.

Maryland is off until Tuesday when it plays host to Rutgers. The game, which is featured as the Under Armour `Power in Pink' match, is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
