COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) scored with 1:41 left in regulation to lift the Maryland men's soccer team to a dramatic 1-0 over No. 18 Notre Dame in an NCAA Men's College Cup match at Ludwig Field.

Buete took a thru ball from Ellis Welker (Sugar Land, Texas) in traffic and beat Irish keeper Chris Sawyer with a shot off his left foot under the crossbar. The ball actually tipped off Sawyer's hand and in.

It was especially sweet for Buete, who had been sidelined since being injured in the first half of the Terps' 5-1 win over Holy Cross on Oct. 31. Buete suffered a strained MCL in the match and had missed the last four matches.

Maryland (11-8-1) advance to face Loyola in the second round of the College Cup. The Greyhounds had a first-round bye and enter the tournament with a 16-1-2 record. Maryland and Loyola will play this Sunday, Nov. 25 at 1 p.m. at Ludwig Field.

The win was Maryland's first in the NCAA tournament since 1998, when the Terps made a run to the national semifinals.

"This game was everything I though it was going to be," said head coach Sasho Cirovski. "We had two of the hotter teams in the second half of the season. I knew going into the match, it was going to be 1-0. It was a great game with goalkeepers making great saves with every ball being contested. We were fortunate to come out on top. We had the willingness to fight for the victory against a strong team."

Maryland controlled the ball for much of the game. The Terps outshot the Irish, 9-6 in the match and Philip Salyer (Dallas, Texas) took all six of Maryland's corner kicks, while Notre Dame did not record one.

The Terps' defense was solid through the match, in fact senior captain Beckett Hollenbach (Havertown, Pa.) called it "the Terps best showing of the year." Maryland held Notre Dame's leading scorer Erich Braun without a shot in the game.

Maryland freshman keeper Noah Palmer (Williamsburg, Va.) made four saves to preserve the Terps' fifth shutout of the year.

Notre Dame finished the season 12-7-0 in Bobby Clark's first season with the Irish.

"We lost a great game," the coach said. "It was one of those games you fight to play in. In the second half, the game opened up and I have to give Maryland credit for making it hard for us to get into the game. But I also credit our players with a hard fought match."

Ironically, the win is a sweet one for Maryland as it lost nearly identical game in its last NCAA appearance in 1999, falling 1-0 to Big East school St. John's on a goal with 1:37 left in regulation.
