OMAHA, Neb. -- The second-ranked Maryland men's soccer team defeated No.15 Furman, 1-0, in the first game of the Diadora Challenge hosted by Creighton. The Terrapins will face Butler at 12:30 (EST) in the tournament's second game. LiveStats will be available for the game on

The Terrapins maintained possession and had several offensive opportunities throughout the first half that were thwarted by excellent play by Furman keeper Alex Maslow. The Terps forced Maslow to make four saves in the first half, including a point-blank shot by Abe Thompson.

"We were very unlucky not to be up by two goals at the half," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "We had numerous chances, but their keeper made some great saves. We put a lot of pressure on goal and we wasted a few opportunities."

The pressure paid off in the second half as Thompson was able to tally the game's only goal in the 57th minute. Goalkeeper Noah Palmer kicked the ball to midfield where it was flicked ahead to Thompson by A.J. Herrera. Thompson was able to head the ball in front of him and out-muscle a defender before putting the ball in the top-right side of the net.

The Maryland defense was able to limit Furman to few legitimate scoring threats. The Paladins were outshot 23-10 and managed just three shots on goal. One of Furman's better chances came in the 50th minute when McNeil Cronin's shot from outside the box hit the crossbar.

"This was not our best game, but we got a win," Thompson said. "It was the first game of the season and I think we were a little over-excited. We calmed down and were able to compose ourselves and regained our confidence."

"We did what we had to do," added Cirovski. "Furman is a good, proud team, and they made things difficult for us."
