CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- - The Maryland men's soccer team (8-3, 3-1 ACC) earned the road-win they were looking for tonight when they downed North Carolina (7-4, 1-3 ACC) 1-0 at Fetzer Field before a crowd of 1,555.

Hermann Trophy candidate Taylor Twellman (St. Louis, Mo.) scored the game winner in the 18th minute when he charged the goal, dribbling through traffic toward the right side of the net. The sophomore forward fired from seven yards out and found the back of the net on a high, straight shot past Carolina keeper Brad Thomas. Rob Birch (West Islip, N.Y.) and Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) were both credited with assists on the play.

The Terps survived a few scares in the first half, including a Chris Carrieri shot that bounced high off the crossbar. The closest calls for the Terrapins in the first half came when the Heels' Matt Crawford and Caleb Norkus fired from close range. The first shot was denied by Twellman, while the second attempt off the rebound was thwarted by fellow Hermann candidate Nick Downing (Redmond, Wash.).

The Terrapins made one final attack before the half ended when Jason Sardis (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) booted one just shy of the right side of the Tar Heels' goal with eight seconds remaining. North Carolina escaped the scare, and Maryland went into the half up 1-0.

Carolina possessed the ball for a good part of the second half, with the first good chance coming for the Heels in the 55th minute. Carrieri tried to do some damage again, launching a shot from less then ten yards out that was double-hand saved by Terp goalie Christian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.). Another quick shot was then fired by Norkus, which Lewis again saved.

Just three minutes later, Carrieri placed another shot on target from seven yards out. Once again, Lewis denied the Carolina attempt in what was an outstanding overall performance by the junior goalie. The Maryland native ended the day with five saves and recorded his seventh shutout of the year.

Both of Maryland's games next week are against South-Atlantic regional foes. The first, a Wednesday afternoon contest at George Mason starts at 2 p.m. On Saturday, the Terps travel to Virginia Beach for their first away contest in the series against the Tribe of William & Mary. The game starts at 7 p.m. and will be played at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex.
