As a Redshirt Senior in 2009: Named NSCAA First Team All-Atlantic South Region...Second Team All-ACC... heart and soul of a very young Maryland backline that often featured two freshmen and a sophomore...fifth-year senior guided the defense to nine shutouts in 2009 while giving up a mere 0.83 goals per game...captain also helped Maryland offensively, scoring three goals and adding an assist in his final season in College Park...netted the game-winner against then-No. 2 North Carolina in one of Maryland's finest victories in 2009.
As a Redshirt Junior in 2008: Workhorse that played in 18 matches while earning one start in 2008 after battling injuries in each of his previous two seasons...saw action in ACC matches against Clemson, N.C. State, North Carolina and a pair of contests in the ACC Tournament... also appeared in four of the Terps' five NCAA Tournament games, including second round action against George Mason, Sweet Sixteen matchup with California, Elite Eight contest versus Creighton, and the national title game against North Carolina.
As a Redshirt Sophomore in 2007: Missed the season due to injury.
As a Sophomore in 2006: Tall and athletic defender ... good decisions with the ball ... redshirted the season after suffering an ACL tear on a trip with the Region I ODP Team in France.
As a Freshman in 2005: Played in 13 games and made two starts ... significant minutes in NCAA Tournament win over Brown (11/22) ... started and played 58 minutes at No. 4 UCLA ... started in collegiate debut against Cal State Fullerton (9/2).
Before Maryland: Two-time team captain for coach Chris McWilliams at Council Rock North ... also a two-time all-league honoree ... NSCAA/adidas youth All-American, team MVP and All-Southeastern Pennsylvania as a senior after leading his team to an 18-2 record ... led the team with 14 assists to go with nine goals ... helped the team to league titles in 2002 and 2003 ... played club for FC Delco Black IV ... a 2004 adidas/ESP player ... member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association (EPYSA) state team since 1999 ... was team captain in 2003 and led the 2004 team to the regional title ... member of the Region I ODP team since 1999.
Personal: The son of Patrick and Joanne Tangney ... born March 18, 1987 ... one of two children, with brother Padraig (21) ... president of community youth group (SHARE) ... chose Maryland to get a good education and compete at college soccer's highest level ... majoring in business.
