COLLEGE PARK, MD - After Saturday’s scrimmage and a day off Sunday, a recharged Maryland football team took the field at the on-campus practice facility Monday morning looking to iron out the final positional battles before focus turns to the season opener against James Madison on August 30.

Alvin Hill is locked in one of those battles.  The junior defensive back is competing with senior Jeremiah Johnson for time opposite sophomore William Likely.

While head coach Randy Edsall has stated he sees all three as starters, Hill acknowledges he need to continue to work hard to start on the field.

“Whatever happens is going to happen,” Hill said. “I’ve just kept grinding really. If I’ve got to stay up a little later to work out or if I’ve got to stay up to watch the film a little more or go ask coach some question or go ask my teammates. Teammates always help you get an outlook that you can’t get.”

Edsall has been extremely happy with Hill’s progress since the end of last season.

“He’s made a big jump since last year and it has been pleasing,” Edsall said. “He’s long. He plays long. He’s got length. He’s smart. I just like the development. It’s the maturity and the confidence level that he’s gained that have allowed him to play at the level that he’s playing.”

One player who doesn’t feel that pressure is sophomore Kenneth Goins. Last year’s starting fullback has locked up the spot again heading into the regular season. A formidable blocker who also is a hard-nosed runner when he gets the ball

“Everything is going well,” Goins said. “I’m executing what I have to do and I’m trying to give my all and just get better with time. I know the offense a lot better and I’m not making as many mistakes.”

While Hill and Goins are established, Edsall will use the remaining couple days of camp to evaluate his younger players.

“We’ll find out some more today about some guys who we want to see what they can do because we’ve got today, tomorrow and Wednesday to go with preseason practice.” Edsall said. “On Thursday, we will go to scout teams and pretty much trying to get to, we’re allowed 70 guys to travel in the Big Ten, so we’re trying to see if we’ve got 70 guys who can contribute this year.”
