Lowe, Shawaryn Earn Freshman All-America Honors

TUCSON, Ariz. Maryland second baseman Brandon Lowe and starting pitcher Mike Shawaryn have been named to the 2014 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team as selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

Lowe and Shawaryn are the first two Terrapin players to be named to a freshman All-American team since Will Frazier and Jason Maxey were named by Collegiate Baseball newspaper in 2002.

Lowe, a redshirt freshman from Suffolk, Va., leads the Terps in hitting and ranks fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference (.339). A third team All-ACC selection, Lowe leads the club in on-base percentage (.462), slugging percentage (.462) and triples (3). He has also added 39 RBI, second best on the club, 35 runs scored, 12 doubles, eight stolen bases and one home run.

A native of Carneys Point, N.J., Shawaryn leads the ACC and is tied for 12th nationally in wins with 11. His 11 victories is a Maryland single-season school record and includes two wins over Florida State and victories against Florida and South Carolina.

Shawaryn has posted a 2.81 ERA with 70 strikeouts compared to 24 walks in 86-1/3 innings of work. In 15 starts, Shawaryn has posted eight quality starts including four straight most recently in Maryland’s first meeting with South Carolina in the NCAA Tournament.
