CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The Maryland women’s golf team posted a stellar team score of 295 Wednesday to finish 14th at the Hurricane Invitational at the Biltmore Golf Course.
Juliet Vongphoumy led the Terps in their spring opener with a 216, including a 73 in the third round. She posted a 71 and a 72 in the first two rounds.
Emily Gimpel shot her best round of the tournament on Wednesday, shaving 10 strokes off her uncharacteristic second round score. She capped the tournament tied for 55th with a 228 (73-82-72).
Jessica Gregory, Heidi Baek and Alexandria Papell were packed tightly together to round out the squad, securing a 234, 235, and 236, respectively. Gregory and Baek each posted a 75 in the third round and Papell tallied a 78.
“We obviously didn’t play as well as we wanted to overall, but I’m very proud of how hard our team competed,” head coach Jason Rodenhaver said. “I think our team is more indicative of the 295 score but the weather this winter has really thrown us a curveball and made playing very tough. We’ll be ready to go next week when we head to Arizona.”
Maryland returns to action March 14 when it travels to Mesa, Ariz., for the Clover Cup.
