COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Ryan Tommins celebrated his 22nd birthday in an unconventional way Monday morning.

Draped in blankets and swathed in Maryland gear, Tommins posted up near the student gate at the Comcast Center with hundreds of his fellow Terrapin faithful awaiting Monday night’s men’s basketball game against No. 4 Syracuse.

Head coach Mark Turgeon arrived a little after noon with hundreds of cheeseburgers in hand to provide lunch to the Maryland faithful who were patiently standing in line seven hours in advance of tonight’s tipoff against the Orange.

“What a way to celebrate my birthday,” Tommins, with a birthday cake at his side, said. “It was a great surprise. We’re fired up about tonight.”

The first recipient of a burger from Turgeon was Dylan French.  French, who is also the president of the Maryland men’s soccer student fan group ‘The Crew’, was the first in line Monday after posting up “very early” to ensure a ticket for tonight’s contest against Atlantic Coast Conference newcomer Syracuse at 7 p.m.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early to the Comcast Center due to a sellout crowd.
