BLACKSBURG, Va.Thea LaFond won her third triple jump competition of the indoor season and two teammates improved their high-jump marks this weekend to highlight Maryland performances at the Doc Hale Virginia Tech Elite track and field meet.

LaFond remained unbeaten in the 2014 indoor season in the triple jump by going 41 feet, 6.50 inches to win. Ashley Corum of Pitt was second at 40-9.75.

LaFond also competed in the high jump and tied for fourth, but senior Amina Smith and junior Amber Melville posted indoor career-bests to finish second and third.

They each cleared 6-0.50 in the event, eventually losing to Saniel Atkinson-Grier, who was competing unattached. It marked the first time that Smith had cleared 6 feet in the high jump indoors.

Both Terps are now tied for second all-time at Maryland behind school record-holder Paula Girven, who went 6-1 in 1980.

Maryland also got a win from its women’s 4x400 relay. Micha Powell, Lisa Meneau, Julie Sinkovitz and Shade Pratt posted a season-best 3:48.36 to win the open division. Maryland’s B squad was third in 3:50.87.

Myah Hicks hit a PR in the women’s mile, with her 4:53.92 clocking placing her in ninth all-time at Maryland. Sophomore Noella Anyangwe had an 8.73 timing in the 60 hurdle prelims, giving her a PR and tying her for ninth all-time indoors.

Transfer Kate Kanetzky finished second in the women’s 5,000 in 17:47.95.

Maryland continued to get solid performances from its men, who are competing indoors though not being a fully sanctioned team.

Transfer Lionel Wilson finished fifth in the invitational 400, with his mark of 48.97 being seventh all-time at Maryland.

Josh Haghighi finished fourth in the men’s 35-pound weight throw at 63-10.50. It was his second-best throw of the season and the fourth time he’s gone past 60 feet in the event.

Maryland will compete at Navy on Tuesday and is scheduled to compete on Friday at the N.Y. Armory in the Lafayette-Rider Winter Games.

The Terrapins are on the path toward the ACC Indoor Championships, to be held at Clemson on Feb. 27 and March 1.
