COLLEGE PARK, Md. –  No. 8 Maryland women’s basketball outran crosstown opponent George Washington, 87-51, behind four players in double figures and a +21 rebounding advantage.

Alyssa Thomas had 18 points and 14 rebounds, and No. 8 Maryland (3-1) never trailed in an 87-51 rout of tough-shooting George Washington on Tuesday night.

“I really like how we responded tonight,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “I thought we came out and played really hard for forty minutes. We weren’t going to win it in the first 4 minutes and obviously George Washington is a really tough team, but I like the fact that we improved in every area tonight. There was a lot of improvement by the players and we got a lot better tonight.”

Thomas had a double-double by halftime and fueled a 17-5 run that put Maryland up 42-22 at the break. Early in the second half, a follow-shot by Thomas capped an 8-0 spurt that made it 52-25 with 15:57 remaining.

The Terrapins finished with a 53-32 rebounding advantage and outscored the Colonials 19-7 at the foul line.

Megan Nipe led George Washington (2-1) with 13 points on 6-for-19 shooting.

The Terrapins dominated the first meeting between these crosstown schools since 2006.

Thomas of was named ACC Player of the Week Monday for the 15th weekly conference honor in her career. Against No. 1 Connecticut, she finished with a team-high 20 points and 14 rebounds.

Next, the Terrapins will travel to Towson Saturday for an 8 p.m. game. All fans planning to attend the game at Towson should expect traffic, as there is a 3:30 p.m. home football game on campus.

The Terps will return home to host Drexel Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. and will host a pregame food drive.
