The Maryland women’s golf team kicks off the 2013 fall slate when it heads to South Carolina for the 11th annual Cougar Classic beginning Sunday.
The 20-team field includes Auburn, No. 24 Baylor, Charleston Southern, Clemson, Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, No. 10 Florida, Furman, No. 22 LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Missouri, No. 20 NC State, UNCG, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Wake Forest and Wisconsin.
Tee time is scheduled for 8 a.m. Sunday for the first group at Yeamans Halls Club in Hanahan, S.C. Yeamans is a Par 72, 6,204-yard course. Monday also kicks off at 8 a.m. while Tuesday’s finale will have a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
Maryland’s lineup for the fall opener is Juliet Vongphoumy, Emily Gimpel, Heidi Baek, Panitta Yusabai, and Alexandra Papell.
Gimpel returns to the Terps for her senior campaign and will lead the squad as a captain and second-year starter in 2013. She will be joined by Vongphoumy, who is also a two-year starter. The former All-ACC performer boasts a proven track record of success at the collegiate level.
Baek is coming off a great spring season a freshman and saw action in every event last year which gives Maryland added experience heading into the 2013-14 season. Yusabai and Papell will make their collegiate debuts at the Cougar Classic Sunday. Yusabai hails from Thailand and Papell is a native of Boca Raton, Fla.
Following the Cougar Classic, the Terps will return to competition Monday, Sept. 30 at the Starmount Classic in Greensboro, N.C.
