Alumni Compete in Golf Tournament

April 15, 2013

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland football alumni returned to College Park to participate in the 2013 Lettermen Golf Outing presented by Gossett Group Friday.

"This is a really special day for all these alumni to come back and get a chance to be with each other and renew acquaintances," said head coach Randy Edsall. "Football is such a special game. The camaraderie you have playing this game -- with the sweat and hard work that goes into it -- these are relationships that last a lifetime. It's good to see these guys come out and be around their teammates but also be around former Maryland players because they all come and bond."

More than 65 people played in the outing, including former quarterbacks Stan Gelbaugh, Sam Hollenbach and Scott McBrien, wide receivers Steve Suter and Darryl Hill, and defensive lineman Joe Vellano.

"I think this is one of the best events that Maryland puts on," said Hill. "It allows the different eras of football to come together at one time. It gives you an up-close look at the current coaches and the athletic staff."

The golf tournament raised funds for the Maryland football program.

After a rain delay, the participants teed off at 1 p.m. in foursomes from the University of Maryland Golf Course. The event featured a raffle and lunch, and was followed by a tailgate for the football team's annual spring game.
