CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Postgame notes following Maryland's 45-38 loss at North Carolina on Saturday.
Kicking Off: Maryland falls to 4-8 and 2-6 in the ACC. North Carolina improves to 8-4 and 5-3 in the ACC. The Tar Heels are now 37-21-1 all-time against the Terps and improve to 21-14-1 in Chapel Hill. North Carolina has won five of the last seven meetings in Chapel Hill.
Ross With His First: When Brandon Ross went over the top for Maryland's opening touchdown, it marked the first career rushing touchdown for the Newark, Del., native. Ross became the fifth different Terrapin to score a rushing touchdown this season. Ross' score cut the Terrapin deficit to 14-7 late in the first quarter. Shawn Petty later scored on a two-yard keeper to become the sixth different Terp to rush for a touchdown.
Ross Over 100 Again: Brandon Ross eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the second time in three games with 141 yards on 21 carries. Ross' 141 yards are a career high and the most for a Maryland rusher this season surpassing Wes Brown's 121 yards against NC State. It included a 71-yard run in the second quarter, which is the longest run for a Terrapin this season.
Diggs to Furstenburg: After Stefon Diggs took the pitch from Shawn Petty, Diggs looked back across the field and found Matt Furstenburg alone in the endzone for an eight-yard score. Diggs' touchdown pass is the first touchdown pass by a non-quarterback for Maryland since Oct. 16, 2010 against Clemson. Da'Rel Scott connected with Danny O'Brien for a score.
Diggs Moving Up: Stefon Diggs finished with eight catches for 82 yards and ran for 20 yards in addition to his 146 return yards. Diggs is now second on the Maryland all-time single-season all-purpose yards list with 1,896 yards and passed Darrius Heyward-Bey for ninth on the single-season receiving yards list with 848 yards.
House Call: Stefon Diggs' 99-yard kickoff return to open the second half was his second kickoff return touchdown of the season tying him with Torrey Smith (2009), Richard Jennings (1975) and Dennis Condie (1960) for the most in a season.
28 First-Half Points: Maryland's two late second quarter touchdowns put the Terps' first half total at 28. It is the most points scored in the first half this season.
Career High for Petty: Shawn Petty finished with a career-best 208 yards passing and a touchdown.
Quick Strikes: Maryland scored 21 straight points between the end of the second quarter and the beginning of the second half. The Terps two second quarter touchdowns and Stefon Diggs' 100-yard kickoff return to open the second half came a mere 34 seconds apart.
Defensive Notes: L.A Goree led the team with career-best 14 tackles including a career-high 11 solo tackles. Goree has led the team in tackles in three straight contests...Dexter McDougle totaled a personal-best 11 tackles including one tackle-for-loss...Darius Kilgo, Keith Bowers and A.J. Francis all recorded a tackle-for-loss for the Terps.
