COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Postgame notes following Maryland's 28-3 win over Towson.
Kicking Off: Maryland improved to 2-2 on the season with a 28-3 win over Towson ... it was the first meeting between the schools ... Maryland has now won its last 16 meetings with current members of the Colonial Athletic Association ... the last loss occurred in 1971 to Villanova.
Early Playing Time: With Tyrek Cheeseboro, A.J. Hendy and Cole Farrand all seeing action against Towson, the Terps have now played eight true freshmen this season (also Keith Bowers, Tyler Cierski, Marcus Leak, Alex Twine and Justus Pickett).
Freshmen Touchdowns: With his 5-yard TD run in the third quarter, Justus Pickett became the first true freshman running back to score a touchdown since Davin Meggett in 2008. Pickett had season highs in carries (14) and yards (82). True freshman fullback Tyler Cierski also had a 5-yard TD reception.
Meggett Reaches Top 15: Senior Davin Meggett cracked the top 15 on the Maryland career rushing yards list with his 102-yard day against Towson. Meggett now has 1,842 in his career, which ranks 14th.
Behind the Line: Maryland had a season-high 11 tackles for loss. Joe Vellano led with 2.5, while David Mackall and Demetrius Hartsfield had two each. Both of Mackall's TFLs were sacks, which matched a career-high for the sophomore (also against Miami, 11/6/10).
Points Off Turnovers: The Terps forced four Towson turnovers (two interceptions, two fumble recoveries) and scored 14 points off them. They committed one but didn't surrender any points off the turnover. Since the beginning of the 2010 season Maryland has scored 140 points off turnovers (41) while the opposition has been held to 34 points (19).
Good Placement: Nick Ferrara came into today's game averaging 45.8 yards per punt, which led the ACC. Though he averaged just 39.2 yards on four tries against Towson, he put all four inside the 20-yard line, including two that were downed at Towson's 2-yard line.
Tidbits: With 102 rushing yards today, Meggett earned his third career 100-yard game and second this season (against West Virginia 9/17/11) ... sophomore D.J. Adams scored the 14th rushing TD of his career and already ranks T17th on the Maryland career TD list ... Lorne Goree made the first interception of his career ... Joe Vellano had a season-high nine tackles ... Demetrius Hartsfield recorded double-digit tackles for the fourth time in the last five games (dating back to last season) ... Maurice Hampton made his first career start on defense.
