Postgame Quotes

Maryland Head Coach Ralph Friedgen
On today's game:
"The coaches did a good job at getting things stabilized at halftime and I think we played pretty well at the end of the game. I thought it was a good first game and I think there were a lot of positives. Jordan Steffy was exceptional. I thought our offensive line played very well. Both of our running backs played hard. We need to stop the unnecessary penalties which will really hurt us in close games."

On the Terps' special teams play:
"I thought our kicking game was good. Obi Egekeze kicked very well. That first field goal was very important to him. I thought Travis Baltz punted very well, even though he didn't kick until the fourth quarter. Chris Roberts did a great job on kickoffs and Terrell Skinner did a great job returning kickoffs."

On the Maryland offensive line:
"Our whole line played very well. We had very few penalties. You could really hear the hitting on the field. I thought we played very aggressively. Out of the backfield, Cory Jackson did a good job blocking and Drew Gloster came in and did a good job, too."

On quarterback Jordan Steffy:
"I thought he looked very comfortable. He played the way he has been practicing. He's different now. I don't know if he's more comfortable with me now or what, but I see a lot more confidence. He's not afraid to offer me suggestions on the sideline, and I kind of like that. He tells me what he saw and I think he'll continue to get better because this game was a real confidence-builder."

On senior tailback Keon Lattimore:
"Keon's had a great camp. He missed all of spring and really wasn't able to workout until late July. I think he's hungry. He sees this is his last chance. I think he's the fastest he's been and in great shape. I thought he ran harder today than I've ever seen him run. A couple of those touchdowns were all determination."

Maryland Player Quotes
Junior quarterback Jordan Steffy
On his play:
"It's a long season, but it feels good to get the first win under our belt. I felt good, but I definitely had some first-game jitters. I was nervous in the first half a little bit, but we were able to come out with the win. We won, which is the most important thing. I was upset that I threw a pick, but most importantly we won the game and I think I played alright."

On the play of tailback Keon Lattimore:
"Keon played really well tonight. Our offensive line really opened up some holes for him. He ran the ball hard and we were able to put points on the board with him getting in the end zone."

On the play of Maryland's running backs:
"When things get sort of cloudy, I try to find the backs. Keon and Lance [Ball] did a great job of getting open where I could find them. I felt pretty comfortable going through my reads. Obviously, it's just the first week and we've got a long way to go, but we just want to continue to improve each week."

Junior linebacker Erin Henderson
On tonight's game:
"It was a good first week and I think we've got some confidence now. We've got to get better with some things, but I think overall it was a very successful first week."

On the defense's performance:
"I think we did a great job getting out there and executing the game plan. We made the tackles we needed to make. I don't think we missed too many tackles today. I think we did a great job."

On quarterback Jordan Steffy:
"Jordan played excellent. He had a really good game tonight and I'm really proud of him. He's waited a long time for this opportunity and I think he's going to continue to do a great job for the rest of the year."

Junior kicker Obi Egekeze
On his first career field goal:
"I knew I hit it well after I kicked the ball. I was slow to look up, but once it went through the uprights, I took a deep breath and got ready for the next kick."

On practice:
"I try to make my practice reps as game-like as possible. I've done well in practice, so I felt like I was prepared for the game. [In the] next practice, I'll try to make myself even more prepared for the next game."

Villanova Head Coach Andy Talley
On today's game:
"I was really proud of our team. I thought we played as hard as we possibly could. I thought we played a terrific first half. There is a lot to build on. We lost our nose guard early -- Brian Hentosz -- and that created a numbers problem for us on the defensive line."

On Quarterback Antwon Young:
"I was impressed with the way Antwon Young played. He is continuing to grow and I was really happy for him. I thought he did a great job of getting the ball to the right people. He made the necessary reads when they blitzed us. He threw some great passes and he did all of that without a running game. We knew that coming into the game tonight that we would have to throw the ball down the field a lot."

On the team's effort:
"Maryland is a big, strong, physical football team. We wanted to be a little bit more competitive in the second half. We cramped up a lot because the same guys were on the field. They probably played 50 to 60 guys tonight. That is always tough on a 1-AA school. I was happy with the effort. The loss is not something you accept but we have something to build on."

On Maryland Quarterback Jordan Steffy:
"One of the things Maryland did with Steffy in a good way was they threw a lot of quick passes. They were not intricate throws and they never got him in trouble in the passing game. I think he is going to be fine. He impressed me; he is a good quarterback and he can make things happen. They did not put their whole arsenal on the field tonight and they did not have to."

Villanova Player Quotes
Sophomore quarterback Antwon Young:
On his first start as a varsity quarterback:
"In the beginning I was a little bit nervous, but as things went along I just started getting more comfortable."

On the team's emotions at halftime:
"At halftime we just felt like we were in a good position. We just felt like maybe we could keep it going and build on that."

On Maryland's pressure in the second half:
"One thing in the second half is they turned up the pressure a little bit. They definitely came out a little more physical."

Junior defensive lineman David Dalessandro:
On Maryland's linemen:
"They were real big and they kept just doubling up on our ends. I think after a while we just got worn out."

On Maryland's offense:
"When they came out in the second half, they definitely started running the ball. In the first half they were passing the ball around more and I was wondering what they were trying to do, you know maybe test it out a bit. In the second half, they came out and ran the ball and we couldn't stop it."

On the positives for the team after this loss:
"The biggest positive after a game like this is that we never stopped playing. As a group, this defense just needs to play more games and that's how we're going to win games."

On some of the team's injuries throughout the game:
"I know a couple of the guys kept cramping up. I think it was just a lot of snaps. I think the defense was on the field 77 times, and that's a lot to be playing. Some of the guys were on the field for 60 plays out of the game and that's tough."
