COLLEGE PARK, Md. – A familiar path leads to a new goal this season for the University of Maryland women’s cross country team.

The 2014 Terrapins will open their schedule with four traditional meets on their way to their first appearance in the Big Ten Conference Championships at Iowa on Nov. 2.

Maryland will travel to Mount St. Mary's, Navy, Lehigh and Princeton in the early-going. Those events will prepare the Terps for their first B1G trip.

The new goals have head coach Andrew Valmon and the Terrapins energized for the new season.

“We are excited about heading to the Big Ten this fall,” said Valmon. “The cross country championships will be held in Iowa, which will be a great chance for our team to start to see some other parts of the country.”

Maryland lost seniors Becky Yep, Julie Sinkovitz and Bridget Nolan, who were the Terps’ top three finishers last season at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional .

But two rising seniors – Maeve McCoy and Myah Hicks – will combine with promising sophomore Hannah Mansbach to  give the Terrapins reason for great optimism for the coming season.

"This season we have a young group with two senior athletes (McCoy and Hicks) who we will look to for leadership,” said Valmon. “Our schedule is laid out to focus on the Big Ten Championships and the Mid-Atlantic Regional meet. We will carry this momentum from the fall through the remainder of the year."

Maryland’s route to the NCAA Nationals will still go through the Mid-Atlantic Region, due to the geographic breakdown of regions. The NCAA Mid-Atlantic will be held at Big Ten rival Penn State on Nov. 14.
