WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Maryland women’s tennis team defeated its second ranked opponent is as many matches, notching a 4-3 victory over No. 66 Wake Forest Saturday afternoon.
Strong play from top singles players Alexandra Stanova and Nataliya Bredikhina was once again the difference for the Terps, who won the doubles point before securing three singles matches. Welma Luus also performed well, winning in doubles and singles.
The Terps won the doubles point for the second straight match behind victories at No. 1 and No. 3. Luus and Bredikhina combined for the win at the top spot, defeating Kasey Gardiner and Xue Zhang, 8-6.
In singles, the Terps fell behind before rallying in the last two contests to take the match. Stanova gave the Terps a 2-0, but the Demon Deacons nabbed three consecutive victories on courts six, three and five.
Luus then knotted up proceedings with a hard fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Samantha Asch. Bredikhina closed it out, taking down Guerin, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5,
The win marked the first time the Terps have won consecutive matches against ranked opposition under second-year head coach Daria Panova.
Maryland returns to action Sunday against North Carolina at 2 p.m. in Chapel Hill.
