NORFOLK, Va. - No. 6 Maryland used a three-goal second half surge after being tied at halftime to beat No. 8 Old Dominion, 5-2, in Norfolk Friday night. Sophomore Maxine Fluharty led the Terrapins with two goals and an assist in the offensive attack.

Maryland (10-3) outshot Old Dominion, 21-5, including just two shots in the second half. The Terps held the Monarchs (10-4) to just two penalty corners the entire game.

"This team played a very good second half," head coach Missy Meharg said. "The defense stepped up and intercepted while the forwards fought hard for every ball."

Fluharty put the Terrapins on the board just 63 seconds into the game when she slid in the left side past Old Dominion's goalkeeper. The Monarch's Nicole Golf tied it up seven minutes later as she dribbled it in along the baseline for the score.

The Monarchs took their only lead of the game at 2-1 in the 23rd minute when Rosario Villagro sent in a shot from 10 yards out. Janessa Pope tied it up for the Terrapins just before halftime when she scored off a rebounded shot on a penalty corner play.

Senior Megan Frazer gave Maryland the lead for good when she made it 3-2 in the 42nd minute off a pass from Fluharty. She cut through the middle of the circle for a goal near the circle line.

Freshman Sarah Sprink added the Terps' fourth goal in the 57th minute off a pass from senior Harriet Tibble off a penalty corner. Fluharty finalized the score at 5-2 in the final minute of the game off a rebounded shot off of a penalty corner.

Junior goalkeeper Natalie Hunter had two saves off of Old Dominion's five shots. The Terps earned nine penalty corners to the Monarchs' two.

Next, the Terps will welcome UC Davis to College Park Sunday for their annual Pink Game. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Maryland field hockey would like to raise money for the `Stick it to Cancer' campaign. Click here to donate and support the search for a cure.
