Maryland Wrestling Announces 2014 Class

COLLEGE PARK, Md. University of Maryland head wrestling coach Kerry McCoy announced the addition of 13 student-athletes for the 2014-2015 season Wednesday.

Fall signings Alfred Bannister and Josh Llopez complete the 15-man class, which features numerous state champions and All-Americans.

“I am very happy that these young men will be joining our family,” said McCoy. “They bring a ton of success and talent to our program. The future is very bright with these guys.”

The class will be Maryland’s first to participate in the Big Ten and join notable returnees All-American Spencer Myers and NCAA qualifiers Tyler Goodwin and Shyheim Brown, Geoffrey Alexander and Frank Goodwin.

Alfred Bannister (141 | Bishop McNamara | Md.) 

Finished his career as the winningest high school wrestler in Maryland history with 272 victories, 201 of those by pin … won four straight Maryland Independent School titles, one of just five competitors to ever achieve that feat … a two-time National Prep Champion … a two-time National High School Coaches Association National Champion … a two-time Beast of the East champion … named to The Washington Post All-Met Team … selected as Maryland’s Dave Shultz High School Excellence Award honoree, which recognizes a wrestler for excellence in wrestling, scholastic achievement, citizenship and community service.

Michael Beck (125 | River Hill | Md.)

A state champion, two-time state finalist … Fila Jr. National finalist in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman, Junior Pan Am Team member, multiple time All-American.

Anthony Duncan (165/174 | Wayne Valley | N.J.)

A district champion … a two-time county champion.

Cassidy Exum (125/133 | Oyster Bay | N.Y.)

A two-time sectional champion and two-time state qualifier... a three-time all-county selection.

Anthony Genco (125 | Hereford | Md.)

A Maryland state finalist … a two-time state placer.

Patrick Gerish (149/157 | Newark Academy | N.J.)

Accumulated an 143-30 career record with 80 career pins … holds high school wins record … a three-time district champion … a county champion and regional runner-up … a state qualifier… four consecutive first team all-conference selection … captained his high school team for three seasons … a Gene Mills Eastern Nationals champion … also played football and soccer.

Toby Hague (149/157 | McDonogh | Md.)

State champion and two-time state runner up … a two-time All-American at USA Wrestling Cadet/Junior Nationals … placed seventh at the Super 32 tournament. 

Josh Llopez (165/174 | St. Mary’s Ryken | Md.)

Two-time National Prep finalist … claimed victory at the 2014 FloNationals … a two-time state champion … a Super 32 champion … won a Junior Freestyle National Championship.

Austin Pagnotta (141/149 | Glenelg | Md.)

A two-time regional champion and two-time county runner-up … a three-time state qualifier … recorded over 100 wins, with 80 percent of them coming by way of pin.

Matt Pente (141/149 | Archbishop Spalding | Md.)

A two-time National Prep All-American …  an NHSCA sophomore All-American … a three-time Junior Olympics All-American …  won a state championship his senior season and was a four-time state placer … second team All-Met selection by The Washington Post and a two-time all-county selection … accumulated the second most wins in Spalding history with 179.

Inan Sikel (157/165 | South Plainfield | N.J.)

A two-time district champion … a regional finalist and state qualifier.

Jacob Trybus (141/149 | Bohemia Manor | Md.)

A member of the 2013 Maryland National Team … a two-time all-state academic team honoree, a three-time Maryland state place winner … a two-time east region champion … a two-time Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference champion … a four-time all-county selection … a three-time MVP of his high school team … also a standout on the track, placing in the state meet.

Brandon Walker (141/149 | Woodberry Forest School | Va.)

A multiple time state placer … a National Prep All-American … was a three-sport athlete at Woodberry Forest (Football, Wrestling and Baseball).

Garrett Wesneski (197 | Canton | Pa.)

A two-time Pennsylvania state medalist … finished eighth as a junior and third as a senior … a 2014 sectional, district, and regional champion … scored bonus points in all but four postseason matches.

Adam Whitesell (125 | Good Counsel | Md.)

A two-time Fargo All-American … a two-time National Prep All-American … a Beast of the East place winner … a Powerade Tournament place winner … a four-time state placer who recorded 100-plus pins in high school.
