Hello Terp Nation!

We are in the heart of one of the busiest times of the year here in College Park and have much to be excited about as we close this chilly month of February.

Congratulations to women’s basketball head coach Brenda Frese, who captured her 300th win at Maryland in a 79-62 win at Georgia Tech on Sunday.  National Player of the Year candidate Alyssa Thomas is putting together a sterling finish to her decorated career, posting her 60th double-double as a Terrapin in eighth-ranked Maryland’s win in Atlanta.  The two-time All-American will have her name and number honored in the rafters at Comcast Center immediately following the Terrapins’ game vs. Virginia Tech on March 2.

We look forward to seeing Terp Nation at its finest on Monday for the Gold Rush as the men’s basketball team hosts No. 4 Syracuse at the Comcast Center.  The Terps are 5-1 in the ACC at home this season.  Be sure to mark your calendar for Maryland’s final two home games as a member of the ACC as well, as the Terps host Virginia Tech March 4 and Virginia March 9.

Moving on to the mat, where Maryland is making final preparations for the ACC Championships March 8 in Blacksburg. Jimmy Sheptock has been ranked No. 1 in the country for over two months and joins Christian Boley and Spencer Myers as wrestlers to keep an eye on at this year’s championships. Maryland is rolling a four-meet winning streak into Blacksburg, including a pair of wins against Duke and NC State.

Gymnastics edged North Carolina last Friday night at Comcast Center with the help of an all-around win by Stephanie Giameo.  Despite an injury-plagued season, the squad continues to claw and fight for victories and exhibit a great deal of Maryland Pride as it enters the second half of its schedule.  The Terps are a perfect 7-0 this season at home.

Watch for a pair of defending league champions to lead Maryland into the ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend at Clemson. Amber Melville won the women’s high jump a year ago and enters this year’s indoor meet as one of three Terrapins, joining Thea LaFond and Amina Smith, who are ranked among the top four in the ACC in that event.  LaFond captured the individual title in 2013 in the pentathlon and Smith has the top high jump mark in the ACC in 2014. The Terps are currently 21st in the most recent USTFCCCA women's rankings.

Baseball and softball have also officially kicked off their respective seasons. Baseball completed a series sweep of Bryant last weekend.   Congrats to Jake Stinnett who was named ACC Pitcher of the Week after striking out a career-high 11 in baseball’s 3-0 win over Bryant. The team also picked up a win at #21 Florida in its opening weekend in Gainesville.

Last but certainly not least, the men’s and women’s lacrosse programs are once again off to a ferocious start.  Both teams are ranked No. 2 in the country after posting key road victories last weekend.

The women’s squad trumped No. 7 Penn State with the help of seven goals from Brooke Griffin and 21 saves from Abbey Clipp.  The Terps are outscoring opponents 61-23.

On the men’s side, Maryland posted an upset in the Carrier Dome, downing No. 2 Syracuse 16-8. The Terps have allowed only 14 goals in three games to start the season.

It’s officially “Beat Duke” Saturday for both programs as the men’s team hosts No. 1 Duke at noon at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.  The women travel to Durham for a battle with the sixth-ranked Blue Devils at 1 p.m.

Finally, I’d like to personally thank our amazing grounds crew for the incredible work they did in getting our facilities ready for training and competition following the mid-February snowstorm.  Many hours were spent fighting the elements to ensure our teams would have the ability to play and they did a spectacular job.

See you tonight at Gold Rush at Comcast and in the very near future at other sporting events around campus!

Go Terps!
