National Player of the Year candidate Alyssa Thomas added her 19th double-double in 24 games and Alicia DeVaughn had a dominating second half as Maryland handled Miami, 67-52, Thursday. The Terrapins (20-4, 8-3 ACC) won their fourth straight and reached the 20-win mark for the 10th time in head coach Brenda Frese’s 12 seasons.
Thomas had 18 points and 12 rebounds on the night. DeVaughn had nine points and 11 rebounds, all in the second half, in front of her hometown crowd and freshman Brionna Jones added 11 points and five boards. Sophomore Tierney Pfirman scored 10 points with four boards.
The Blue Devils (22-3, 9-2) took both meetings over the Terrapins last year and narrowly own the all-time series, 40-39. Maryland last won in Cameron Indoor Stadium exactly six years from Monday, Feb. 17, 2008, the same day Frese gave birth to twin boys, Tyler and Markus Thomas.
Thomas is just 111 points from breaking Crystal Langhorne’s school scoring record of 2,247. Thomas’ 1,112 career rebounds are 117 shy of Langhorne’s record of 1,229. With her 57th career double-double vs. the Hurricanes, Thomas needs just three to surpass Langhorne’s record of 59.
The Terrapins are ranked No. 9 in the latest Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls.
The fifth episode of the Terrapins’ reality show, Under the Shell, will air Sunday at 10 a.m. on Comcast SportsNet.
After Monday’s game, the Terrapins will host Florida State (17-7, 5-6) Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at Comcast Center. The Terps-Seminoles game can be seen on Comcast SportsNet locally, Fox Sports South and more channels across the country.
