Duke Upsets Maryland In ACC Men's Lacrosse Final

ORLANDO, Fla. - The No. 2 seeded Duke Blue Devils (10-4) upset the No. 1 seeded Maryland Terrapins (10-2) to capture their second ACC men's lacrosse tournament at Disney's Wide World of Sports. Senior midfielder Scott Bross (Ellicott City, Md.) was named the tournament MVP after a sensational weekend winning 22 of 34 face-offs. He won 11 of 16 on Sunday in helping the Blue Devils to their second title ever with the other coming in 1995. The backbreaker was a second qaurter in which the Blue Devils outscored Maryland 6-1 to build an insurmountable 6-2 halftime lead. Maryland was only able to get withing two at 7-5 at the end of the third quarter.

Dan Chemotti (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Kevin Brennan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) each scored two goals and had assists for three points apiece to lead Duke.

Duke went on that 6-1 run in the final 6:34 of the second quarter to take a 6-2 lead at halftime. The Blue Devils scored on six consecutive shots including two goals from Dan Chemotti (Syracuse, N.Y.). The Devils barraged Maryland goalie Pat McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md.) as the four other Duke goals came from Kevin Brennan (Farmingdale, N.Y.), Kevin Cassese (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y), Alex Lieske (Timonium, Md.) and Terrence Keaney (Alexandria, Va.).

Mike LaMonica (Parkton, Md.) gave the Terps a 1-0 lead on the only goal of the first quarter as he ripped a laser past Duke goalie Matt Breslin (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) off a pass from Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.)

The All-Tournament Team consists of: Duke: Scott Bross (MVP), Kevin Cassese, Matt Breslin, Kevin Brennan, Stuart Schwartz, Dan Chemotti, Chris Hartofilis, Maryland: Mike LaMonica, Michael Howley, Mike Mollot, North Carolina: Bobby Gormsen, Virginia: Conor Gill.

Maryland returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Mount St. Mary's. Duke travels to Hofstra to face the Pride on Saturday on Long Island.
