COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 8 Maryland men's lacrosse team dominated Mount St. Mary's, 19-3, in the season opener for both teams at Byrd Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Fourteen different Terps scored goals and 17 tallied at least one point as Maryland moved to 71-3-1 (.953) all-time in season openers, dating back to the first varsity season in 1924.

After a sluggish start in which the game stood scoreless for the first 10:52, the Terps opened the flood gates at the end of the first quarter and never let up. Chris Malone (Timonium, Md.) scored the first and third goals to give Maryland a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Andrew "Buggs" Combs (Baltimore, Md.) assisted Maryland's next three goals -- in the second quarter -- passing to Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.) for his first college goal at the 9:55 mark of the second, Ricky Sears (Chevy Chase, Md.) for his first college tally at 8:42 and senior Marcus LaChapelle (Severna Park, Md.) at 5:41 to give the Terps a 6-0 lead.

Mount St. Mary's broke up the shutout as Doug Thompson (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored with 5:06 left in the second. Maryland had not allowed a goal in nearly an entire game, spanning back to last season when the Terps shutout UMBC for the entire second half of the season finale.

The Terps outscored the Mountaineers 5-0 in the third quarter on a pair of goals by Combs, and single tallies by Mike LaMonica (Lutherville, Md.), Alex Poole (Hunt Valley, Md.) and Jon Kemezis (Crofton, Md.) to lead 12-1 at the end of three quarters.

Redshirt sophomore Mike Morsell (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) opened the fourth period with a natural hat trick scoring three straight in a span of 1:46, to put Maryland up 15-1 with 12:33 left in the game. Maryland closed out the scoring with goals by senior Dan Hughes (Westminster, Md.) and freshmen Chris Edwards (Baltimore, Md.), Willy Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and Sean Leary (Troy, Mich.).

In his first college start, junior goalie Pat McGinnis was stellar in net, allowing just one goal over the first three quarters and making 10 saves. Redshirt freshman Dan McCormick (McLean, Va.) came on in relief to make seven saves in the fourth.

The win was Maryland's largest margin of victory (16) and fewest goals allowed (3) since, the Terps crushed Radford 21-2 on April 1, 1997.

The Terps return to action with the ACC season opener on Saturday, March 4 at preseason No. 5 Duke at 1 p.m.
