No. 8 Terps Fall To No. 5 Duke, 9-8 In ACC Men's Lax Opener

DURHAM, N.C. - Duke's T.J. Durnan scored the game-winner with just 1:58 off a pass from Jared Frood to give the No. 5 Duke Blue Devils a stunning 9-8 victory over the No. 8 Terps at Koskinen Stadium in the ACC season opener on Saturday.

Maryland twice fought back from deficits, 4-1 early in the second quarter to take a 6-4 lead with 3:37 left in the first half and 8-6 in the third quarter to tie the game at 8-8 in the third on Chris Malone's second goal of the game.

Duke jumped out to a 2-0 first-quarter lead before Mike LaMonica scored the Terps' first goal on a pass from Mike Mollot.

After Duke led 4-1 following Frood's tally 3:07 into the second quarter. Maryland reeled off five straight goals, three from Marcus LaChapelle and one each from Mike Morsell and Malone to take a 6-4 lead with 3:37 left in the first half.

Duke tied the game just before the half on goals by Durnan and Greg Patchak, who scored with just three seconds left in the half.

Duke continued to score in the second half and took a 8-6 lead with 7:48 left in the third on Frood's third goal of the game.

The Terps battled back to tie the game on Craig Hochstadt's first goal of the season and Malone's second goal of the game.

That set the stage for a hotly contested fourth quarter in which Duke was able to seure the victory on Durnan's tally.

Pat McGinnis made nine saves for the Terps, who fall to 1-1.

Maryland is back in action on Tuesday, as they host Bucknell at 3 p.m. at Byrd Stadium.
